The Dali Prince Duan Yu, the Shaolin Monk Xu Zhu, and the Beggar Leader Qiao Feng are the three main characters of the epic. Throughout the performance, each of their lives is intertwined until the story’s finale, when they collide and come together.
In his effort to uncover his true identity and the mystery surrounding an incident that left him an orphan 30 years earlier, Qiao Feng tells his story. Due to his adventurous father when he was younger, Duan Yu had numerous half sisters he was unaware he had, and his story includes his encounters with them as well as his conflict with Duan Yuan Qing about who should rule Dali. The Care Free Sect, one of the most potent and secretive cults in existence, is engaged in an internal conflict, and Xu Zhu, a humble Shaolin monk, finds himself in the centre of it. Their tales are set in the warring Song, Liao, Dali, and Western Xia kingdoms during the Northern Song Dynasty.
